Animal Success Stories
... Janine Allen ...
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.
She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.
Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.
I rescued a human today.
RADAR
(4.10.09) Ray (Radar) has been an awesome dog. We often wonder how anyone could have given this little guy up. He is a very sweet and is always trying to please. We are working on building his confidence back up since he always thinks he is in trouble. The thing is he does nothing wrong at all. We are even to the point where he does not go in his crate when we leave the house. We can trust him to not get into anything or have an accident. I am going to take his crate down. He enjoys going everywhere we do, and rides in the car great. We go for long walks in the woods and a leash is not required, although I use one in the neighborhood. He still tends to not like strangers so we watch him the first few times he is around someone. But for the most part, he is Mr. Happy Go Lucky and seems to know that he is going to have it good from now on. I attached a picture of Him with his favorite rabbit. That pretty much shows how he looks most of the day. He gets up to play real hard for about 30 minutes then back for a good nap. I would swear he is part cat. --- Dan (5.4.09) How are you all? Hope this finds you well. We are doing great. Radar “Ray” is still as sweet as ever. We just took him to get his nails filed and he weighs 60.2 lbs. Dan says he is getting round, but I think he looks very healthy. He is our baby for sure! He loves to get in bed with Hanna when we are reading books at night. He enjoys playing with the neighbor dog, a basset hound named Kalvin. He loves all the neighbor kiddo’s and wants to be outside playing whenever they are. He does not like thunder storms and needs to sleep with us when it is storming outside. Ray loves car rides! Ray enjoys walking to school with Hanna and enjoys running along side me for exercise. We just ran/walked about 4 miles today. He has been such a joy to have in our family. We will send you some pictures as soon as Dan get’s them on the computer. Hope you are doing great. Sincerely --- Shawna, Dan and Hanna
(10.22.12) Hi! I don't know if you remember, but my husband, daughter and I rescued Radar (aka rayray) about 4 years ago from you and we just wanted to let you know how much he means to us! We love him so much! He has brought so much happiness to our family, I really do not know what we would do without him!!! He is such a sweetie! He loves to cuddle and follow me around everywhere. He sleeps with our daughter every night. He is the neighborhood doggy and is well liked by the kids. I remember he held a special place in your heart and just wanted you to know how amazing he has been. He is so smart, knows many tricks and is very friendly with kids and other dogs!! We are getting ready to celebrate his 6th birthday. Thank you for your love and devotion to these sweet boxers!! Shawna B.
