Animal Success Stories

Skyline Bar

 ... Janine Allen  ...

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

TANA

(11.6.10) Tana is doing great! We all love having her in our family. She is such a wonderful dog. She is still very leary of new people and warms up to people very slowly. It took her several months to even be comfortable with Brian. She loves to play but is very gentle. She also loves treats - I think she has trained me to give her a treat when she sits by the pantry. Overall, it has been a fairly smooth easy transition. We are so greatful to have her! Thanks for all your help!

LEXXI
LEXXI

(11.6.10) Lexi is wonderful and as sweet as we thought she would be. She is the princess of the house. My spouse’s elderly father lives with us and she is a great companion for him. Some mornings she makes several different kinds of sounds to wake us up just as though she were talking with us. We did have a big bump in the road. A few weeks ago suddenly she decided that she was going to do her “business” in the house. And she would not go out in the garden when it was dark. We talked with our great mentor from Bark Busters for advice. Nothing that he suggested worked. He was really surprised since these were tried and true method. She knew that we were very unhappy with her and became quite despondent. Her personality changed. I took her to her vet to see if she had a medical problem and she was fine. This lasted for two weeks. As a last resort, when it was dark, I put her on a leash and walked her very slowly all over the garden and the sides of the house. She heeled very close to me. We went inside and I praised her and gave her treats. The next day she went out with me and did what she needed to do without any hesitation. We praised her and loved her. She even talks to us when she wants to go out. We have the sweet adorable Lexi back again. It is such a special feeling to rescue a dog and have it become a part of the family.

RUBY

(11.6.10) Ruby is doing well. Ruby and I did an obedience training class over the summer and did we ever work hard. She was the only boxer in the class and probably the most hyper. The trainer said she was high adrelanine charged. I would actually like to repeat the class in a few months and see if we can go farther in the obedience. She is very playful and loves kids. She will immediately sit like a little lady when someone approaches especially kids and then smothers with kisses. She loves to go for walks. I have named her Ruby Tuesday. I ran into a couple in the park one day and they had a female boxer and her name was Ruby Tuesday. We all laughed because we thought we each had a unique name.

KOSMO

(11.4.10) Kosmo is doing wonderful. His name is now Jake. He really fits in well with our family and his 2 other boxer cousins even though they live off aways. He is a happy little guy. Not so little now close to 50 lbs. Jake was the puppy with the broken leg and it sometimes gets a little sore but it doesn't slow him up any. He loves to do boxer burns in the back yard with a big smile on his face. He also loves to chase butterflys and shadows of birds or whatever else flys by. He also loves to run in the house followed by spinning around as fast as he can. He is a good traveler and you can see he is a aggie fan by the bandana on his neck. I appreciate Houston Boxer Rescue and especially Cheryl for all she did in helping us get this special dog. I tell everyone I can about HBR and how good rescuing a

BLAINE

(11.3.10) Blaine or Hank as we call him now is doing great! Actually our daughter also gave him the name of Pancake. He is a great addition to our family and has been doing excellent. He is now over fifty pounds and seems to be very happy. I am sending this email from my phone and will send some pictures soon. We greatly appreciate the wonderful present you have given our small family. Thank you again and have a wonderful day.
