CHECK ME OUT! I am not quite ready for adoption, but my Foster Mom wanted to show me off!
Meet
RiRi
!
This sweet girl was found running amuck on the streets of Welasco, Tx. A really nice family took RiRi in and started looking for a rescue to help her. HBR stepped up to the challenge. RiRi's leg was badly injured, but she still got around and had a passion for life! While all four feet were present, she was only using 3 to get around. She was also found to be heartworm positive and had an ongoing urinary tract infection.
What we assumed was going to be a straight forward amputation turned into needing an Orthopedic consultation.
RiRi
was able to have her pelvis imaged via CT scan at Texas A&M University where numerous, yet healing, pelvic fractures were noted. She also had a Neurology consult where they determined she no longer had feeling in her left hind limb from her paw to her knee. Thankfully, none of her pelvic fractures needed stabilizing but an amputation was her best option at returning to a 'normal' life.
RiRi
checked in for her amputation and spay procedure, ready to get on with living a normal doggy life. Unfortunately her lab work that morning showed some abnormalities in her platelet count and for her safety, surgery was postponed. She was started on a steroid, Prednisone, to help increase her platelet count and now goes in for weekly checks to make sure her platelet count continues to increase (which it is!).
She completed her antibiotic course for her UTI and a urine sample was sent off to be cultured to ensure the infection had fully cleared. Unfortunately, this poor girl hit another roadblock and the culture results showed she has a multi-drug resistant bacteria still present. Due to her current treatment for her low platelets, we are very limited on which antibiotics we can use to treat her infection. She started her new medications just a few days ago and seems to be doing well!
RiRi
is SO resilient and none of her ongoing issues have slowed her down one bit! She still wants to run and play (though currently not allowed), loves stealing your spot on the couch, and LOVES her two legged foster kids. She is learning what cats are and how to coexist with other doggos. She loves treats and takes all her medications like a champ!
